Bowling Sucked

But, I did get to see a guy thread the needle on a Murphy split.

I've seen a lot of strange things at bowling, but I'd never seen that before.

Survivor

If I could have, I would have voted myself onto an island by myself late last week. But since that's not a privilege that I enjoy (apparently they don't let you vote yourself off) I was stuck here dealing with my new craptop, my grandmother, my whole family of in-laws, my kids, the other half and the entire world that is out to get me. Did I leave anybody out?

The new craptop was occupying a lot of my time and energy. I was desperate to get my software loaded on it so I could take the old one in to be looked at. Never mind that the new one has issues of it's own that will have to be dealt with in time as well.

I must be one resourceful person because I managed to get all my software loaded without using the defunct DVD/CD drive. It turns out that it reads DVDs just fine, it just can't read a CD to save it's life. I don't know about you, but all of my software CAME ON CDS, DAMNIT!

I managed to download a copy of Microsoft Office 2003 Student Edition (I'm looking at the lovely shiny CD as I type this) but it was in some funky format that forced me to download some software I'm sure I'll never again have any use for just to be able to read the file and install the software. I was able to load my License Key so I don't feel the least bit bad about technically downloading illegal software.

It's a good thing I save every shopping related email I get. I was able to download and install Nero from one of those emails. Luckily, most of the software I use is free. But that doesn't prevent me from having to reinstall and reconfigure it all. What a huge pain in the buttocks.

I just successfully finished importing all of my Outlook files. I did have to reload all of my email accounts. Luckily I still have HP to get the details I needed. Tomorrow the HP goes to Justin. I sure hope he can get the usb ports back just on principle.

I don't really care if he can't since I do have the new laptop but the kids may not like the lack of usb ports when the HP gets handed off to them. Zooks 97 is already eager to get his hands on it. A little too eager if you get my drift. It'll probably take me weeks to get all the stuff that he's not supposed to see OFF of it so he may have a longer wait that he anticipates.

Here's the list of software I had to beg, borrow and/or steal for the new laptop:

Aaaaaaaaaaaaack!

So much to do and so little time and yet here I am blogging. WTF am I thinking?

I already ran to the store for last minute items and picked up the turkey. It's in the oven but I still need to pick up the house and make my two side dishes. The Other Half already prepared his item.

I need to get my ass in gear but here I sit messing around with this damn laptop.

As a warning to others: NEVER BUY A REFURBISHED LAPTOP!

Short list of issues:
  • Wireless connects/disconnects intermitantly
  • DVD DOA
  • PCMCIA card won't even go all the way in the slot
Also, I hate Vista. I would not recommend upgrading to it until they have Service Pack XXV out. Srsly. Never had more problems getting software to work and it's all Vista.

I'm pretty sure they are going to end up sending me an entirely new laptop since this one has so many issues. I'm convinced that the wireless card is farked and that's usually built into the mother board.

I'm tempted to get a new larger hard drive and start a fresh install with Windows XP if/when they get me an operable unit.

Wish me luck... with dinner, then puter.

Happy Turkey Day!

Sorta.

Traditionally, we celebrate Turkey Day a day or too later than most. The Brother-in-laws' wives have taken over that day to spend at their families' homes. So, we have always done our family meal on Friday or Saturday.

So while the rest of you are stuffing yourselves silly, I will be cleaning my house and preparing some dishes ahead to save myself some trouble tomorrow.

Luckily it shouldn't be too much work. My Mother-in-law prepares the fresh turkey for me and all I have to do it slap it in the oven.

We'll be eating ourselves silly while you are out standing in 10 deep lines spending your ill-gotten gains on stuff your loved ones will be returning nano-seconds after opening.

GG me.

On another note, I received my new laptop at 4:57pm, Tuesday, just as we were running out the door to dinner. As soon as we got home I started setting it up. The next day I discovered that the DVD drive wouldn't read any disk I put in it. Sigh.

The closest repair place is 40 miles away. I'll be calling them to arrange for repair/replacement of the drive.

I spent quite a while with tech support diagnosing the issue with the DVD drive and the wireless networking. I could not get connected to my new N router. Turned out that Vista or my wireless card had to have the security set for WPA2 only. Damn thing. I had to reset my router and every other wireless connection in the house. I won't even mention that it won't connect at N speeds for some reason. Sigh.

I used a transfer utility to get some of my programs over but it would transfer my Office because it detected a trial version on the new laptop. I need to work with that some more since the DVD drive isn't working so I can't install it that way. I seriously need to synch my cell phone with Outlook.

The plan is to take the HP with the dead usb ports in to be diagnosed and use the Toshiba until I get a verdict on the HP. Then the Toshiba will head out the door.

I spend a few hours configuring my mother's new laptop. That was significantly easier since the only things she does are email and bridge. I may have to keep hers around until I get at least one of these others working at 100%.

Someday, oh, someday I'll have a working laptop.

Cell Phones

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Now that was hilarious. I just figured out that my phone (Motorola Q) can play videos and music just like an Iphone. I ended up taking back the iPod Nano that I bought myself for Xmas because I only need one device - I bought this phone to replace my old phone and Palm to reduce the number of things I needed to carry around with me. The fact that this phone also replaces my old MP3 player, too, well that's just another bonus. Besides, that ~$200 will offset some of the unexpected Laptop expense that recently popped up.

Also, check out this new LG Phone. I may have to have one of these when I get my next upgrade. Jimmy from bowling may end up getting one of these when they come out tomorrow. The bastard.

Kiddie Bowling

The Zooks boys bowl every Saturday in a youth league.

Zooks 97 is a natural talent at most everything he tries. Zooks99 has to work a little harder at but he has great potential. It's hard to make comparisons because there is an age gap - and, really, I shouldn't be making comparisons like that at all. Bad Mommy, bad bad Mommy.

The Other Half offered to let me do my Thanksgiving grocery shopping while he took the boys to bowling yesterday. At first I wasn't going to take him up on his offer but the more I thought about it the more appealing it became.

Of course that meant I wasn't there to see this:

Bad Mommy, bad bad Mommy. Sigh.

Classic Movie Test

Orly?

Technodrama III

Your order for 1 Toshiba Satellite Core Duo Widescreen Notebook on 11/16/2007 has been recently shipped via FEDEX.

In the face of the demise of my usb ports I went laptop shopping at all the usual places: CC, BB and OD, just to name a few. All of the laptops I wanted were >$1000. Some >>>>$1000. It was not looking good.

Truthfully, the thought of setting up another computer makes me want to hurl. I have this one just the way I want it damnit (sans external keyboard, wireless mouse and cell phone synch at the moment).

I am a dedicated Woot shopper. If you haven't been there you should check it out. They sell one item per day usually at a very good price. Now, I'll be the first to admit (and so will they) that some of the stuff is crap. The Woot writers have talent unsurpassed when it comes to product descriptions.

Forget Black Metal. It’s over. It’s had its day. Blue Metal is the new thing—specifically, the blue metal of this Toshiba Onyx Blue Metallic Satellite Notebook.

Don’t believe us? Well, here’s a point-by-point comparison clearly demonstrating the superiority of Blue Metal. Compare, contrast, and concede, unbeliever.

STYLE:
BLUE METAL - Eye-catching style in a newly redesigned half-pipe casing
BLACK METAL - Chubby Scandinavians in corpsepaint and bondage gear

Advantage – Blue Metal

SOUND:
BLUE METAL - Harman/Kardon speakers for premium sound
BLACK METAL - Ossicle-rattling onslaught of thrash guitar

Advantage – Blue Metal

STAYING CONNECTED:
BLUE METAL - With a built-in webcam, high-speed wireless, four USB ports and an i.LINK IEEE-1394 port, you can communicate with anyone, anywhere, anytime
BLACK METAL - The “Dark War” divided Norwegian and Finnish metal fans and stoked animosity that persists to this day

Advantage: Blue Metal

FIRE SAFETY:
BLUE METAL - Of the many spontaneous laptop computer combustions on record, we’re unaware of any involving Toshibas
BLACK METAL - Inspired over 50 Norwegian church arsons through the mid-’90s

Advantage: Blue Metal

WHAT’S INSIDE:
BLUE METAL - Intel® Centrino® Duo Mobile Technology
BLACK METAL - Satan

Advantage: Toss-up

Now, one of the coolest things that Woot does is called a Woot-off. During a Woot-off they sell non-stop. As soon as one item is sold out another item is put up. These are fun and you will see all kinds of things on the block.

Yesterday, while I was mourning the demise of my laptop, calling the insurance company to check on repair coverage, setting up a date for me to drop it off with the repair guy while simulataneously looking for a replacement online Woot was having a Woot-off.

While this laptop is still functional, I cannot live without the usb ports. My kids, on the other hand, could use it to do homework. The Zooks boys already have two desktops adjacent to each other on a long counter in the basement where they play innumerable games and watch YouTube videos (yes, I have the parental controls on!). Now that Zooks97 is starting to have to do homework on the computer he has been whining about how distracting it is to try to do it while Zooks99 is playing wild and noisy games. Enter mostly functional laptop.

That however does nothing for my problems.

I STILL NEED A FULLY FUNCTIONAL LAPTOP!

Imagine my surprise when this bad boy popped up on Woot. It was almost like manna from heaven except you can't eat it and it's blue. Ok, ok, it's nothing like manna from heaven. After confirming that it had everything I wanted except a TV tuner (sacrifices sometimes have to be made), flying the idea by The Other Half, and conferring with my friend (not Zerb) I pressed the I WANT ONE button and then proceeded to immediately have buyers remorse.

This bad boy had wireless N to go with the new TrendNet Wireless N router I just bought.

Looks like you know where you'll find me next Tuesday after the Fed Ex Truck stops at my house.

Wish me luck.

The Big Bang Theory

A long long time ago...

In a proto-galaxy...

Oh, nm. I'd make a stupid joke and you'd pry not get it anyway.

My friend (not Zerb) turned me on to this new tv show: The Big Bang Theory. It's all about geeks n stuff. I actually LOL while watching this show.

L.O.L.

Srsly.

I'd say we are even now for me turning him on to Rome and Weeds. Ok, pry not. He still owes me BIG time. Hahahahahha! Get it? Big Bang... Big time. :P!

Technodrama, Day II

So after doing the whole master reset on the phone and determining that the problem was all my phone I'm still adjusting to life with a different setup. I'm not so set in my ways that I can't adjust to life's little curve balls.

The usb port issues, however, are still unresolved. I managed to get back my external keyboard, cell phone synch cradle and the cordless mouse however briefly it might have been. I left my house this morning to go bowling (we won't go there now) and run some errands.

I get home to a frozen laptop and it's a little warmer than I recall it ever being.

Oh joy.

I unplug, de-battery and reboot. Yet again, none of my usb ports work. After scouring the interwebs for this issue and, as a last resort, hitting up the HP Support page I try this-n-that but to no avail. It's sad to say but this laptop is no good if I can't synch to my cell phone.

I'm afraid that my dear laptop is going to have to go into the shop. My computer boy, Justin, is very good and I have a lot of faith in him. I'm hoping this is some trivial problem that will be easily repaired. Else, I hope it can't be repaired and I will be, er, forced to get a new screaming beasty of a laptop and hand this still functioning (sans usb ports) laptop to Zooks97 who is dying for a chance to get his hands on it. (Note to self: surgical cleaning will be required to removed all "questionable" material before turning control over to child.)

Let's see, when would be a good time to take laptop in to shop. Hmmm, tomorrow is Friday. Highly unlikely to get it back before weekend.

Friday is bad idea.

Monday. Monday should be good. Wait, next week is Thanksgiving. Oh Shit. Unless Justin can have it fixed by Wednesday I'll have to be without until at the least the following Monday.

Crap.

Damn.

Shit.

This is not looking good.

(Note to self: never eff up a computer the week before a major holiday.)

... to be continued.

Technology

Most days I'm delighted to live in this world teeming with Technology.

This is not one of those days.

While messing around with Video Converting yesterday, my laptop kept locking up. I finally got it done but was less that thrilled with all the bother. Then I saw that little yellow shield on the bottom of the screen indicating that I had a Windows update. Oh joy.

After I ran that update:

NONE OF MY USB DEVICES WERE RECOGNIZED INCLUDING MY WIRELESS MOUSE.

WTF? Srsly.

And, to add to my misery:

I HAD A TOURNAMENT STARTING UP IN 15 MINUTES.

I scrambled to re-install my mouse and reboot the machine. I arrived at the table late and still can't use my external keyboard. Sigh. I'll have to reboot again at the break, if I make it that far. Talk about not having your head in the game.

Additionally, someone tries to send me a pix message about that same time frame and, as usual these days, I get an error when I download it. I finally decide that I'm fed up with this and call Verizon Tech Support since this has been a problem for me for some time now.

Ms. Tech Support does something and VIOLA I can received and send pix messages. BUT, then she says let me do a couple more things.... yes, that's the sound of SHIT GOING WRONG! Sigh.

Whatever she did really screwed things up. After that I couldn't even access the internet. D'oh! We try all kinds of things and she says we'll just have to wait for the service ticket to be processed.

In the mean time I peruse the intertubes looking for other people with the same issue. Turns out a lot of people are having issues but nobody is getting any consistent kind of resolution. Looks like the Verizon people aren't telling people whatever it is that the are doing to correct the issue so there's nothing I can ask about to help with the solution.

This morning I fire up the phone and the Internet is now working, thank gawd. But, the pix messaging still a no go. After more research I stumble across something that I call to question the Tech Support people about and again no help.

So here I sit.

Frustrated.

Screwed by Technology.

What else is new.

Monday AM Bowling

I was asked to sub for a Thursday AM bowler in his Monday AM league. I'm so surprised at how many people bowl multiple leagues WITH THE SAME PEOPLE. Not the same teammates, mind you, but the same people bowling in different leagues. Part of the fun of bowling is to bowl with different people.

I should talk. LOL. My Thursday team has 3/4 players from Monday night.

I agreed to sub for this guy but warned him that I may not do it again if it adversely effects my Monday Night game. The last time I tried to bowl two leagues in the same day turned out to be a bad thing.

I've been having a hard time warming up to bowling in the mornings already so I wasn't really sure how well I would do. It was a handicap league so I really wasn't too worried.

I'd say I held my own:

If my math is correct I bowled an 857 series for a 214 average! Woooooooot! Now I will never bowl in that league again because the next time I do I won't have any handicap or any hope of repeating that series! LOL!

I guess the adjustments I have been making are working well.

The true test will be how I bowl tonight. Improving your form can have a dramatic effect on how well you can bowl over many games. I'm a much better bowler now than the last time I tried to pull this off.

One of my Monday night bowlers showed up to watch us bowl this morning and threatened me with bodily harm and humiliation if I didn't bowl this well tonight.

Wish me luck!

Tagged

By Jamyhawk. Boy he must have been scraping the barrel if you had to tag me. I consider myself to be on the outskirts of the fringes of the gutters of bloggerdom.

The rules:

  • Link to the person that tagged you and post the rules on your blog
  • Share 7 random and/or weird facts about yourself
  • Tag 7 random people at the end of your post and include links to their blogs
  • Let each person know that they've been tagged by leaving a comment on their blog.

So, I'm charged with coming up with seven little knows facts about myself.

  1. I have a potty mouth. Big one. My kids make fun of me. The youngest has taken to say "bleeping" in place of the actual curse word as a work around.

  2. I have a raunchy sense of humor to go along with my potty mouth. I'm not always proud of either of these attributes but not usually ashamed.

  3. I went to 23 different schools from Kindergarten to 10th grade. I was lucky enough to stay at one school from 10th - 12th. My therapy bill would be huge - if I went.

  4. I wanted to go to the Air Force Academy. Didn't get in for many reasons not the least of which was my horrible eyesight.

  5. I was the student chapter president of American Society of Mechanical Engineers in college. Geeks R Us.

  6. I once ran 7.5 miles on a treadmill in 1:22 while training to run the Indy 500 Mini-Marathon. I ended up not running it because of an injury. :(

  7. My braces come off in 4 weeeeeeeeeeeeeks! Wooooooot!

Would I Make Fun of You?

I don't get it. Do you?

For reference purposes, the original source:

P.S. Thanks to my friend (not Zerb) for this gem!

Bowling (yes, again)

The Thursday morning league has been a struggle for me so far. I'm not happy with my 184 average, sfobv. I'm not sure why but I can't seem to get used to the idea of bowling that early in the day.

This week I decided to work on my approach and release. I wanted to have a smoother, less lofted release. I started that during the second game and it really showed.

Brian had been struggling too but threw a really nice series this week.

The leadoff bowler for the other team was on a tear with a spare and 8 in a row the first game. We were a little concerned about winning it until we struck well in the 10th for the win.

Jimmy even noticed my new approach and release and commented that it was working well for me. I'll have to try to remember what I did when Monday night rolls around.

Get it, rolls around. :P

6 Handed SNG

Snuffy talked me into playing a 6 handed sng with him. This was my first - I usually stick to the full table versions.

I was a card rack plain and simple. My modest hands hit the flop. I doubled up early with AQ v KQ. The guy I ended up HU with sucked out on my QT with A9 on a flop of Qx9, turn A when we were 3 handed. I pushed with AQ v AK and hit my Q. It was JAMOT after that.

This was my favorite hand of all. How can he not call my all in?
